While most studios are solely focused on sequels/remakes, Pixar has been out here taking chances. After the release of Incredibles 2 and Toy Story 4 in 2018/2019, the studio has been focused on original material.
They released Onward and Soul in 2020, both original films. And their next feature, Luca, is also an original idea.
The original animated feature is a coming-of-age story about one young boy experiencing an unforgettable summer filled with gelato, pasta and endless scooter rides. Luca shares these adventures with his newfound best friend, but all the fun is threatened by a deeply-held secret: he is a sea monster from another world just below the water’s surface.
This film was directed by Enrico Casarosa, and he told reporters that this story is deeply personal for him, because he’s also a sea monster from another world.
No, really. It’s a personal story for him because it’s set in the Italian Riviera, where he grew up.
This is a deeply personal story for me, not only because it’s set on the Italian Riviera where I grew up, but because at the core of this film is a celebration of friendship. Childhood friendships often set the course of who we want to become and it is those bonds that are at the heart of our story in Luca.
Pixar just released the new poster you see below for the film. It’s currently scheduled to be released on June 18. It’s not clear if it’ll be released on Disney+ or theaters…or both.
