We all know Netflix is not afraid to spend money. They have dropped plenty of cash the past few years, and they show no signs of slowing down.
Their latest acquisition? A big action-thriller flick titled ‘Fast & Loose‘ which will star Will Smith. Filmmaker David Leitch is set to direct. He’s previously directed Atomic Blonde, Deadpool 2, and John Wick.
Deadline first reported in February that the package was hitting the market with every major player involved in the bidding war. Netflix would eventually win rights and has taken its time in negotiating the deals.
The film follows a man who wakes up in Tijuana with no memories. As he pieces together his past, he learns he’s been living two lives, one as a crime kingpin and the other as an undercover CIA agent.
Sounds like a solid role for Smith. It’s easy to see how much fun he could have with this character.
It’ll be interesting to see the release strategy for this film. Will Smith still has a name that’s big enough to attract box office heat, so you’d think they’d want to give it a theatrical release.
But at the same time, they’ve spent lots of $$$ on big action flicks before and were firm in their streaming only release. They clearly make enough money without box office sales.
Actress Annie Murphy became a household name after starring in the hit sitcom ‘Schitt’s Creek‘ which found worldwide fame on Netflix.
After starring on the show for all of its six seasons, Murphy has now moved on to another series, Kevin Can F**k Himself. The dark comedy is currently airing on AMC and receiving mixed-to-positive reviews.
But she’s not just a television actress. It’s being reported that Murphy will produce/star in the upcoming comedy film, Witness Protection.
Witness Protection centers on a woman who has always defined herself by her romantic relationships, but when she is forced to enter witness protection, she must try to figure out who she really is for the first time while maintaining her cover and keeping the criminals at bay.
She’ll actually be reuniting with writers Rupinder Gill and David West Read on the project. She previously worked with them on Schitt’s Creek.
The original conceit for the project was developed in-house at Alloy Entertainment, which worked with Murphy to package the project that ultimately sold to MRC Film in a competitive situation. Elysa Dutton and Leslie Morgenstein will produce for Alloy Entertainment, with Sloviter producing for MRC.
No word on when filming is set to begin, but they’ll have to work around Murphy’s schedule, as she’s in high demand right now.
Another ‘Ghostbusters’ film? You got it. A new trailer for the upcoming ‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’ film has dropped this week.
The movie, which was co-written/directed by Jason Reitman, is a sequel to the original Ghostbuster films from the ’80s. It’s the fourth film overall in the Ghostbusters franchise.
Set thirty years after the events of the second film, a single mother and her two children move to a small town in Oklahoma, where they discover their connection to the original Ghostbusters and their grandfather’s secret legacy.
The movie stars Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, Paul Rudd, and Mckenna Grace. Additionally, the original Ghostbusters team (including Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd) will reprise their roles.
A lot of people are looking forward to this flick, hoping it brings life back to the franchise after the 2016 reboot failed to impress the general audience and lost the studio around $70 million.
‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’ is set to hit theaters November 11, 2021. Check out the trailer below…
A24 dropped what might be the strangest trailer of the year. The first trailer for the supernatural folktale ‘Lamb‘ was released online this week, and it’s making everyone say, “What the fu…:
The movie stars Noomi Rapace and follows a childless couple in rural Iceland who make an alarming discovery in their sheep barn.
After defying the will of nature in an attempt to heal their pain, they soon face dark and malevolent consequences.
The film debuted at Cannes Film Festival and the critics who have reviewed it have tried their best not to give away too much. They have praised it though, calling it “mesmerizing” and “bizarre.”
Making his feature debut is director Valdimar Jóhannsson, who also wrote the script with Icelandic poet Sjón. ‘Lamb’ is produced by Hrönn Kristinsdóttir, Sara Nassim, Piodor Gustafsson, Erik Rydell, Klaudia Smieja-Rostworowska and Jan Naszewski.
Rapace joined this project back in 2019, and while speaking with Variety, she explained how she fell in love with the script…
A script like this is rare and I directly felt that I had to do it. I’ve never done anything like this before and I can’t wait to start filming and go back to my roots in Iceland.
The movie is set to hit theaters October 8. Check out the trailer below…
Well, damn. Universal and Peacock just dropped some serious cash on a new ‘The Exorcist‘ trilogy. This news coming from a report by The New York Times.
According to the report, the studios have teamed up to purchase the rights to the trilogy for a cool $400 million. It’s being described as a “megadeal” and for good reason. That’s a lot of cash to drop, especially during these uncertain times.
It’s also being reported that Ellen Burstyn will reprise her role from the original 1973 classic. She’ll be joined by Hamilton star Leslie Odom Jr.
David Gordon Green is set to direct. He’s the writer-director behind the recent ‘Halloween’ films.
Blumhouse is producing with Morgan Creek Entertainment. The first film in the trilogy is expected to arrive in theaters in late 2023, adds the site. ‘Under the terms of the deal, the second and third films could debut on Peacock, according to one of the people briefed on the matter.’
So it’s looking like this could be another theatrical/streaming hybrid release strategy, which is a bit odd because horror films are the one genre performing well inside theaters right now.
The Exorcist franchise hasn’t been on the big screen since the 2005 release of Dominion: Prequel to The Exorcist, an alternate version of the previous year’s Exorcist: The Beginning. Those films came in the wake of 1977’s The Exorcist II: The Heretic and 1990’s The Exorcist III.
With a release date set for 2023, it’s likely filming on the first film starts sometime in 2022.
It wasn’t a particularly inspiring box office weekend for theaters across the country, but still, M. Night Shyamalan and the cast/crew of ‘Old‘ should be celebrating a victory.
The 50-year-old filmmaker’s horror/thriller flick ‘Old’ took home the top spot at the box office with a $16.5 million debut weekend. That’s certainly not a bad domestic debut, but it’s not all that impressive either, when you compare it to pre-pandemic numbers.
Still though, ‘Old’ is in a much better position than Paramount’s ‘Snake Eyes‘ film, which had a terrible opening weekend. The action-flick starring Henry Golding made just $13.3 million this past weekend against a budget around $100 million. It’s looking like the studio is going to take a huge loss, unless the film is able to perform better overseas. So far, it’s made just over $4 million overseas, but it’s only opened in 37 markets.
‘Space Jam‘ also had a disappointing weekend. After grabbing the top spot last weekend, the film fell hard in its second weekend. It made just $9.6 million, which is a 69% drop from its opening weekend.
So yeah, the box office isn’t back completely yet, but at least we’re talking about it. At least it’s a discussion once again. This time last year, the box office didn’t exist.
Congrats to Shyamalan and the cast of ‘Old’ for the big win. The film was made on just an $18 million budget, so it’s looking like it’ll make a decent profit.
Whoopi Goldberg has been living her best life on ‘The View’ in recent years, but she wasn’t always a talk show host. Some of you might not remember, but Goldberg is a legit actress. She’s won an Oscar! She was the first black actress to be nominated for both Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress.
So if you get her to sign on to your film, it’s a pretty big deal. It’s being reported this week that the 65-year-old actress is set to star alongside Danielle Deadwyler in the upcoming film, Till, which is about Mamie Till-Mobley’s fight for justice for her 14-year-old son, Emmett.
Deadwyler will portray Mamie Till-Mobley, while Goldberg is set to play Till’s grandmother, Alma Carthan. Goldberg will also serve as a producer on the project, for MGM’s Orion Pictures, alongside Keith Beauchamp, Barbara Broccoli, Thomas K. Levine, Michael JP Reilly and Frederick Zollo.
The movie was directed/co-written by Chinonye Chukwu.
Goldberg talked to the media about how much this project means to her…
We have waited a very long time to bring this historically necessary important film to people. And as we watch the repression of American History when it comes to people of color it makes it even that more important. I couldn’t be with better people: Fred, Barbara, Chinonye, Keith, Michael and Danielle.
‘Till’ chronicles Mamie’s decision to have an open casket at Emmett’s funeral and to allow Jet magazine to publish photos from the funeral, so that people all around the country could see the true horrors of her son’s murder.
The decision from the grieving mother was a galvanizing moment that led to the creation of the civil rights movement.
No word on when this project is expected to film, but we’ll keep you posted.
The upcoming ‘Dune’ film is perhaps the most anticipated movie of the year. It seems like everyone is talking about it. The remake, adapted from Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel, stars Timothee Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin and many more.
A teaser trailer for this flick was previously released, but now this week, Warner Bros. has blessed us all with the full trailer.
The trailer includes plenty of fight scenes, including hand to hand, mass warfare and space combat. And of course, a shot of the gargantuan sandworms that inhabit Dune and are feared by all.
So if you’re like me, and you’re not familiar with the work of Dune, you may want a description of what to expect, right?
Don’t worry, we have you covered:
A mythic and emotionally charged hero’s journey, ‘Dune’ tells the story of Paul Atreides, a brilliant and gifted young man born into a great destiny beyond his understanding, who must travel to the most dangerous planet in the universe to ensure the future of his family and his people. As malevolent forces explode into conflict over the planet’s exclusive supply of the most precious resource in existence — a commodity capable of unlocking humanity’s greatest potential — only those who can conquer their fear will survive.
And if you’re like me and still have no idea what the hell it’s about, even after reading that description, well…I can’t help you.
Dune was directed by the incredibly talented Denis Villeneuve. It’s set to hit theaters (and HBO MAX) on October 22, 2021.
Apple/A24 have teamed up to distribute Joel Coen’s upcoming film, The Tragedy of Macbeth. The black-and-white film is the latest take on the classic Shakespeare play.
Denzel Washington stars as Macbeth and Frances McDormand plays Lady Macbeth. This is Joel’s first solo directing outing without his brother Ethan.
A loose adaptation of Shakespeare’s ‘Macbeth,’ Coen’s next film follows the same premise — a Scottish lord sets out to become the King of Scotland after being convinced it is his destiny by three witches.
People have been itching to watch this movie. Many critics believe it will be an awards contender, and with Coen in the director’s chair, and Denzel starring, it’s hard to argue with that.
The movie will makes its world premiere as the opening night film of the 59th New York Film Festival on September 24. It’ll then be released later in the fall by Apple/A24.
Coen had this to say about opening the festival…
The New York Film Festival is a place where I’ve been watching movies as an audience member and showing them as a filmmaker for almost 50 years. It’s a real privilege and a thrill to be opening the festival this year with The Tragedy of…
We have been waiting months to hear more about Jordan Peele’s latest flick, and thankfully today (July 22) we’re getting a little more information. Just a little though.
The filmmaker revealed the title and the first poster for his next project. The movie is titled ‘Nope‘ and it’s set to star Daniel Kaluuya, Keke Palmer and Steven Yeun. As most of you know, Peele previously worked with Oscar-winner Kaluuya on his debut feature, Get Out.
Check out the poster below…
What does it mean? No idea. We don’t really know anything else about the project, beyond the cast, title, release date and this poster.
He didn’t even provide us with a logline, and he probably won’t for a long time. We probably won’t get more information until the trailer drops sometime early next year, at least that’s our best guess.
Of note, on the IMDB page for this project, there’s an actor credited as a “Fry’s Customer” and an actor credited as “Kid Sheriff”
What does that tell us? Not sure. Fry’s was a big box electronics store, which recently shut down all stores due to the changes in the retail industry and COVID-19. So it’s possible one of the characters works at a Fry’s, or maybe some aliens take over a store. Or maybe all the electronics in the world cause some sort of mayhem.
I DON’T KNOW! WHY IS THERE A KID SHERIFF? We’ll just have to wait for more answers.
