We just talked about how Amazon broke some Sundance records by acquiring Late Night for $13 million and The Report for $14 million. If you missed it, you can click on this link.
New Line is expected to break both those records by purchasing the coming-of-age drama, Blinded by the Light, which is set to Bruce Springsteen’s music. The film reportedly debuted to a “rapturous” standing ovation at Sundance.
New Line is expected to acquire distribution rights for a cool $15 million. Once they cross the t’s and dot the i’s, it’ll be the most expensive deal out of the festival this year.
“Blinded by the Light follows a Pakistani British teenager who dreams of escaping life in his drab London suburb. He connects with the music of ‘The Boss,’ whose hardscrabble lyrics mirror his own struggles with racism and economic deprivation.”
The film stars Viveik Kalra, Hayley Atwell and Rob Brydon. As someone who loves both coming-of-age films and Bruce Springsteen, you can imagine how excited I am for this movie. It’s definitely making my “must watch 2019” film list.
By the way, New Line was battling with both Fox Searchlight and Amazon for this deal. So yeah, Amazon was prepared to drop even more cash at the festival. THEY ARE COMING AFTER NETFLIX IN 2019![mashshare]
