Netflix Wins Bidding War For De-Aging Father-Daughter Drama ‘Backwards’

With money to burn, Netflix has won yet another bidding war. The streaming giant just beat out six other studios for the rights to turn the short story ‘Backwards‘ into a feature film.

If you haven’t heard of the story, it was written by mother-son team Julianna Baggott and Finneas Scott.

A dying father chooses a method to extend his life that involves reverse aging in a de-aging facility. Appointed to be his caretaker is his estrange daughter. As the years peel off, they are able to get to the core of where they went wrong as the father relives the memory of different portions of his life, experiences which made him an unlikeable person.

I suppose it sounds like an interesting story? I mean, it has to be if it sparked a six studio bidding war, but that description isn’t doing a lot for me. I’ll probably just have to read the story.

According to the report, Netflix has already hired Shawn Levy to direct the project. He’s the filmmaker behind Free Guy and Cheaper by the Dozen. He’ll also serve as a producer.

Not much else is known about this project. It doesn’t appear that a cast has been set, but for some reason I’m feeling Steve Carell for this. Again, I haven’t read the story, so you know, I could be totally off.

…I should really read the story. I’m gonna do that. Bye. Congrats Netflix.
