Netflix attempted to enter the blockbuster action movie world last year with fantasy-action film Bright, which starred Will Smith. It was made with a budget of $90 million, which at the time was the biggest budget for a Netflix film.
That’s going to be changing, though. According to a report from Deadline, the streaming giant is teaming up with Michael Bay, and they’re giving him a $150 million budget to work with.
The movie, currently titled Six Underground, will star Ryan Reynolds. The script was written by Deadpool writers Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese, so it’s a pretty familiar team for Reynolds.
“The Hollywood Reporter has revealed some plot points, saying Six Underground revolves around six billionaires who fake their own deaths and form an elite team to take down bad guys.”
I suppose that sounds interesting? Perhaps. I mean, Netflix doesn’t seem to care about what the critics think, so they’re not trying to impress Walter Johnson Williamson from the Tulsa Express.
Bright was absolutely trashed by critics, but it was still watched by an estimated 11 million people in just three days, so negative reviews don’t exactly hurt films released on Netflix. I mean, they certainly don’t help, but it’s not as damaging as it is for movies being released inside theaters.
Six Underground is expected to be released in 2019.
