Movie Theater Owners In New York City Beg Governor Cuomo To Reopen Some Theaters In New York

Most states have reopened theaters in some capacity. Even California has opened many theaters in major cities like San Diego and San Francisco.

But New York is the one state still sticking with a complete shutdown. Even though they don’t have as many cases as some other states, the initial shock of the first surge is still in Governor Andrew Cuomo’s mind.

Movie theater owners in the state are pleading with the governor to reveal some reopening plan, similar to Gavin Newsom’s plan in California.

The executive committee of the Global Cinema Federation, a worldwide organization of major cinema operators, wrote an open letter to the governor…

We recognize your commitment to ensuring that the citizens of New York remain safe and protected from COVID-19. With certain zip codes in New York seeing spikes of the virus, we are, of course, not suggesting that you open the entire state at once. We are, however, requesting that you adopt a plan similar to that in California, where Governor Newsom has allowed openings on a county-by-county basis according to virus data.

The state of New York is an important market for the exhibition industry, not only in the United States but also around the world. With New York’s theaters shuttered for nearly seven months and no indication of when they will be allowed to reopen, the studios that supply new movies have been reluctant to release their latest films to the point where almost no new major films will be released globally until 2021 and beyond.

Theater owners are worried most operators won’t survive this year if they’re not allowed to reopen within the next couple months.

It’s truly a difficult position to be in. You can understand both sides here, but I think Cuomo does need a clear plan. You need something, and so far, Newsom’s plan in California seems to be working. I don’t see why it couldn’t work in New York as well.
