We all figured shark thriller ‘The Meg‘ would take the top spot at the box office, and it did. The film had an amazing debut with $44 million domestically and $91 million internationally. Those numbers are well beyond what the experts predicted, so congratulations to Warner Bros.

But the big story this past weekend was the success of Spike Lee’s film BlacKkKlansman. The crime drama, which only opened on 1512 screens across the country, took home just under $11 million this past weekend, which is more than enough to expand the release next weekend.

It’s Spike Lee’s biggest opening in over a decade and his third-biggest opening of all time right behind the 2000 hit, The Original Kings of Comedy.

Not only is the movie performing well with the audience, it’s also a hit with the critics, and it could get some love during the upcoming awards season

“ItĀ seems like a real possibility that Lee and ‘BlacKkKlansman,’ given the accolades the film has already collected, could find themselves with an invitation to the Oscars.”

Check out the trailer below and make sure you watch this film!!! Even if your MoviePass isn’t working, go see it!
