It’s no surprise to learn the new ‘Star Wars‘ flick dominated the Christmas box office. It made $32 million on Wednesday, which is the second best Christmas Day showing only behind 2015’s The Force Awakens.
But that’s enough about Star Wars. Let’s focus on the smaller films. Both ‘Little Women‘ and ‘Uncut Gems‘ premiered on Christmas Day, and they performed pretty well.
Little Women made a solid $6.4 million, which was good enough for third place at the box office. It’s expected to make over $22 million during its first five days at the box office. Not a bad start at all, considering it worked with a budget of just $40 million.
Meanwhile the A24 thriller/drama ‘Uncut Gems’ starring Adam Sandler also performed well. It made $5.9 million on Christmas. It’s the best opening day in A24’s history. It’s expected to make over $16 million during this holiday weekend.
I watched both Little Women and Uncut Gems last night and was impressed by both. Enjoyed Uncut Gems more though, but that’s likely because it was more of the style I tend to enjoy. It was definitely another success for the Safdie brothers.
And while I don’t think it’s likely, Sandler should get an Oscar nomination for his performance.[mashshare]
