Just when you thought the Hunger Games franchise was over, Lionsgate Vice Chairman Michael Burns pulls you right back in. During the UBS Global Media and Communications Conference, Burns claimed the franchise “will live on and on.”
Burns didn’t give any details, but it does look like it will be in the form of prequels and not sequels. As most of you know, the first two Hunger Games films were the most successful at the box office. The final Mockingjay films still took home a ridiculous amount of money, but not nearly as much as the first two films.
And the studio believes the decline was caused by the lack of contained arenas in the final films. They believe younger fans enjoyed the battles in the arenas more than the dark storyline taking place outside.
“If we went backwards there obviously would be arenas.” Burns said. That’s really all we know about the project though. No official announcements have been made by the studio. No release dates have been announced or anything like that, so don’t expect to see another Hunger Games movie come out next year. It will probably be at least 2017, and that’s if they can put together a quality script.
Hopefully they don’t ruin this franchise by focusing on just the action inside the arena. The original story truly did have a powerful message behind it.
Melting that down to just kids killing each other inside arenas to sell more tickets to kids, well, that would be something reserved for President Snow.[mashshare]
