Damn. Lionsgate is moving fast on The Book of Luke, a feature drama about the controversial hip hop group 2 Live Crew and its manager/lead vocalist Luther Campbell.
Craig A. Williams is writing the script, and RJ Cyler is set to star as Campbell. Some of you may know Cyler from his role in Me and Earl and the Dying Girl. He’s also in the new TV series, I’m Dying Up Here, and he starred in Brad Pitt’s War Machine. He’s one of the most talented, young actors in the game right now.
And honestly, he was born to play this role. His parents actually met at a 2 Live Crew concert.
According to Deadline, The Book of Luke is based on the memoir Book Of Luke: My Fight For Truth, Justice And Liberty City…
“The film will tell a story that is Straight Outta Compton meets The People Vs. Larry Flynt, the rise of a provocative hip hop group and its envelope-pushing antics that got Campbell out of his poverty-stricken origins in Miami to become a millionaire and a galvanizing symbol of free speech.”
As we mentioned above, the studio is moving fast with this project. No word on when filming might start, but we’re willing to bet it’ll be late 2017 or early 2018.
