According to the internet, Leonardo DiCaprio enjoys only two things in life: women between the ages of 20-25, and promoting his views on climate change.
And thanks to the post-apocalyptic YA novel The Sandcastle Empire, Leo has figured out how to satisfy both needs at the same time. The novel was written by Kayla Olson and is set in 2049 when the Earth “is at a breaking point due to climate change, coastal flooding and overpopulation.”
Paramount Pictures decided to option the novel and Leonardo DiCaprio was more than happy to join the project as a producer. Obviously, some people are going to roll their eyes at this news. The post-apocalyptic films are starting to lose their appeal. We saw it just recently with The 5th Wave struggling at the box office. It wasn’t a terrible film, it’s just people are getting a little bored with the genre.
But this story might be different. The book reportedly targets climate change directly, which might be an interesting new twist on the post-apocalyptic stories. That’s obviously the thing that attracted Leo to this project.
The actor just recently discussed the issue while speaking with reporters backstage at the SAG awards in Los Angeles.
“We shot at high altitudes in Calgary, and weather conditions were unprecedented. The locals had told us they’d never had weather extremes like that since they’ve lived there. And you realize that 2015 was the hottest year in recorded history, December was the hottest, you know, December in recorded history.”
