Let’s be honest here. No one thought ‘John Wick’ would take home $79 million worldwide at the box office. We love and respect Keanu Reeves, but his career had been in a bit of a slump. And while the trailers for John Wick were entertaining, it looked like a film most people would wait to watch at home.
That was not the case. People (including the MovieSmackTalk staff) fell in love with the movie. It was one of the surprise hits of 2014, and now the directors behind the film are talking about bringing Mr. Wick back to the big screen.
Chad Stahelski and David Leitch shared the exciting news with Movies.com,
“We have ideas for days and without blinking twice we know we can outdo the action from the original. It’s the matter of story and how much you like the character. That’s always the most important. If there’s great action but you have a character that no one likes and doesn’t have charisma you’re not going to watch it. So we want to make sure we have a story and a character that everybody loves and then we’ll dress it with action that we promise will be awesome.”
That’s refreshing to hear. Most of the time, sequels to action films rely too much on the action. Seeing blood and explosions is nice, but it doesn’t mean anything without a great story and someone to root for.
We’ll see what happens with this project. If they can develop a decent script, it shouldn’t be hard finding a studio to give the green light. As we mentioned at the beginning of this post, the first film made $79 million, which is outstanding for a reported $20 million budget.
