We have been all over this for months now. John Wick was one of the biggest surprise hits of 2014. Even our demanding critic on this site gave it four stars, which is pretty freaking impressive. The action flick managed to get an 85% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
And more importantly, it earned more than $78 million at the worldwide box office. That’s a big deal because it was produced on just a $20 million budget. Films don’t get sequels if they don’t make money. John Wick made lots of money, so it was announced earlier this year that there would be a John Wick 2. We learned that Chad Stahelski would return to direct the film by himself this time, and of course the brilliant Keanu Reeves would return to star.
That was back in May though. We hadn’t heard much since then, but that all changed this week. According to Coming Soon, production for John Wick 2 will begin this fall. The film will be released through Lionsgate’s Summit Entertainment.
No other details have been released; however, Stahelski did try to explain earlier this year how they plan on making John Wick a wicked cool franchise.
“We have ideas for days and without blinking twice we know we can outdo the action from the original. It’s the matter of story and how much you like the character. That’s always the most important. If there’s great action but you have a character that no one likes and doesn’t have charisma you’re not going to watch it… So we want to make sure we have a story and a character that everybody loves.”
Hopefully a release date soon follows.[mashshare]
