Joaquin Phoenix has been winning a lot of awards this season for his performance in ‘Joker‘ and he’s been using his speeches to bring awareness to important issues.
And this past weekend during the 2020 BAFTAs, Phoenix might have given his most important speech yet.
While accepting the award for Best Actor, Phoenix expressed gratitude, but also made it clear he’s had advantages some others haven’t.
I feel conflicted because so many of my fellow actors that are deserving don’t have that same privilege. I think that we send a very clear message to people of color that you’re not welcome here.
I don’t think anybody wants a handout or preferential treatment, although that’s what we give ourselves every year. I think people just want to be acknowledged, appreciated and respected for their work.
You could tell he was a little nervous while giving the speech (more nervous than he usually looks) but he continued with a powerful ending.
We have to do the hard work to truly understand systemic racism. I think it is the obligation of the people that have created and perpetuate and benefit from a system of oppression to be the ones that dismantle it.
Well done, Joaquin. Well freakin’ done.
