We told you last week that Lionsgate wanted to continue the success of the Hunger Games franchise. The Vice Chairman for the company, Michael Burns, teased that the franchise would “live on and on,” and also hinted that prequel movies might be coming soon.
It’s been reported that the studio believes the two latest Mockingjay films “suffered” at the box office because they didn’t feature contained arenas. Basically, the studio believes younger fans like the idea of the actual Hunger Games more than the dramatic story behind the games. Bringing back the franchise in the form of prequels would allow them to bring back the arenas.
This news excited some fans, but Hunger Games star Jennifer Lawrence believes it’s too soon. She revealed that she wouldn’t want to be involved.
“I wouldn’t be involved. I think it’s too soon. They’ve got to let the body get cold, in my opinion.”
It’s hard to blame her. She spent several years filming and promoting the franchise. It’s natural for her to be like, “Hey….can we let it rest for a bit?” Honestly, I’m on her side. It’s too soon for a prequel, and from what is being reported, it sounds like money is the only thing motivating the studio.
They should only come back to it when they are inspired by a new story.
