If you want to make it in Hollywood, you probably want to go through all of your social media profiles right now and make sure there is nothing offensive on them.
James Gunn, the director of Guardians of the Galaxy and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, has been fired from the third movie in the franchise. He will NOT direct the third installment after a series of offensive tweets were ~unearthed~ this week.
In the tweets, which were posted between 2008 and 2011, Gunn joked about rape, 9/11, AIDS, etc.
“The best thing about being raped is when you’re done being raped and it’s like ‘whew this feels great, not being raped!’” one tweet read. Obviously he was joking, but you can’t be making those distasteful jokes if you want to work for Disney.
Disney sent out a statement saying…
“The offensive attitudes and statements discovered on James’ Twitter feed are indefensible and inconsistent with our studio’s values, and we have severed our business relationship with him.”
This all happened extremely fast. Heck, Gunn was scheduled to participate at Sony’s Comic-Con panel this weekend, but obviously that will not be happening now.
Gunn went on his Twitter account to apologize for his offensive tweets…
“In the past, I have apologized for humor of mine that hurt people. I truly felt sorry and meant every word of my apologies. For the record, when I made these shocking jokes, I wasn’t living them out. I know this is a weird statement to make, and seems obvious, but, still, here I am, saying it.”
We’re sure someone at Disney/Marvel knew about these tweets from the start. They’re firing him now because the tweets went viral, and you know…that’s life as a public figure. Don’t say stupid sh*t, especially not on social media.
