Independence Day fans are already fighting with one another after more information about the sequel was revealed during a livestream event. The official title will be Independence Day Resurgence.
You can check out some photos from the set below, and then we will tell you all about the plot details that have fans of the original film fighting.
So what about those plot/character details? Here is what we know.
Liam Hemsworth’s character: An orphan whose parents died in the first alien war. He later joined the military and became one of the best pilots in the world; however, he made a few mistakes and was demoted to driving a Moon Tug, which sounds like it could be some strange party bus for astronauts in need of a release. But really, it’s the impressive machine you see in the image above.
Director Roland Emmerich on the title: “We call it in the film the War of ’96. It’s like a post-World generation that’s unified, and that’s amazing to see a world come together with a common enemy. That’s a resurgence.”
Maika Monroe’s character: The daughter of Bill Pullman’s character and self-proclaimed badass. She works with the new president in the sequel and is also a fighter pilot.
Jessie Usher’s character: The son of Will Smith’s character, “He grew up in the world that his dad saved, so you can only imagine what being the son of the world’s savior is kind of like. It’s a lot of pressure, he’s under that shadow, but it’s not a negative thing at all. He took it for what it was and made a good thing out of it.”
And finally we have the official synopsis….
“Independence Day was just the beginning. We always knew they were coming back. After that film redefined the event movie genre, the next epic chapter in the Independence Day universe delivers global spectacle on an unimaginable scale. Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare us for the aliens’ advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction.”
What do you think? Are you disappointed? Excited? Reading the comments online, it looks like a 50/50 split right now between fans. We can only imagine how nasty the YouTube comment wars will be when the first trailer is released.
Independence Day Resurgence is scheduled for a June 24, 2016 release.
