Birds of Prey, DC’s comic-book spinoff of ‘Suicide Squad‘ is set to hit theaters February 7, 2020, which is this weekend if you’re reading this right now. Right now being February 6.
The movie stars Margot Robbie, Rosie Perez, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Ewan McGregor.
So far, the reviews are pretty positive. It has a solid 88% rating on Rotten Tomatoes with over 100 reviews counted. That should help box office numbers this weekend.
Experts say the film should make between $50 and $55 million in its opening weekend. Warner Bros. is trying to calm expectations by predicting around $45 million.
The film cost $80 million to make, so a $50 million opening would not be a bad start at all. $80 million is actually on the cheap side when it comes to superhero flicks.
For reference, Suicide Squad worked with a $175 million budget.
Birds of Prey — directed by Cathy Yan and written by Christina Hodson — is the only new wide release in theaters this weekend, so it won’t have much competition among ticket buyers. Another factor working in its favor: it’s been weeks since a studio has released a major movie, and the box office is ripe for a hit.
