Thursday morning was an important morning for actors, directors, writers, animators, costume designers, and several other people in Hollywood. The Oscar nominees for the 88th annual Academy Awards were released.

And yes, there are some pretty big surprises. Ridley Scott didn’t get a Best Director nomination for his hilarious comedy The Martian, and Aaron Sorkin failed to receive a Best Adapted Screenplay nomination for Steve Jobs, which is surprising considering he just won a Golden Globe award on Sunday for Best Screenplay.

The Oscars also decided to remain very white. Will Smith didn’t get any love for his role in Concussion, Ryan Coogler also found no love for his work on Creed and F. Gary Gray was also denied any Oscar nominations for Straight Outta Compton.

But it wasn’t all bad. The Academy voters did get a few things right. Brie Larson was nominated for Best Actress, Sylvester Stallone for Best Supporting Actor and Alex Garland is up for Best Original Screenplay for the lovely Ex Machina.
