‘Godzilla: King of the Monsters‘ entered the box office trying to win back a ridiculous $200 million production budget.
It debuted in over 4,000 theaters and managed to grab the top spot at the box office, but unfortunately that’s where the good new ends. It made $49 million during its opening weekend, which has to be a little disappointing.
It’s the third installment in Legenday’s MonsterVerse, which started well with a $93 million opening for 2014’s Godzilla and a $61 million opening for Kong: Skull Island.
So yeah, no one is happy about the decline. But the studio is still hopeful the movie performs well this coming week, “The good news is kids are out of school starting today and people are on vacation, so you have audiences available seven days a week,” Jeff Goldstein, head of domestic distribution for Warner Bros, told Variety.
Aladdin came in at second place with $42 million in its second weekend inside theaters. Rocketman opened in third place with $25 million, and the horror-thriller ‘Ma‘ opened in fourth with $18 million, which is not bad at all considering it was made on a $5 million budget.
Overall, it was a decent weekend for Hollywood, but only because so many films were released.
This coming weekend, Dark Phoenix and The Secret Life of Pets 2 will hit theaters nationwide. There will also be limited release of The Last Black Man in San Francisco and Late Night.[mashshare]
