The ‘Fast & Furious‘ franchise took a little bit of a risk by expanding its universe with a spinoff filmed titled Hobbs & Shaw. Of course, all the risk was pretty much offset by the star power of Dwayne Johnson.
The film opened in theaters this past weekend and made $60.8 million at the box office, which was more than enough to earn the top spot.
And while $60 million doesn’t sound like a lot for a film with a budget of $200 million, you have to remember the Fast & Furious films do extremely well overseas.
Hobbs & Shaw made $120 million internationally, which means it’s already made $180 million total.
That haul marks the fifth-highest grossing global debut for Universal behind ‘The Fate of the Furious,’ ‘Jurassic World,’ ‘Furious 7’ and ‘Fifty Shades of Grey.’
It still has work to do globally though. That $180 million total so far is a little misleading because US films don’t gets as big of a cut from global ticket sales. So they’ll need to go well over the $200 million mark to earn back that ridiculous budget.
Will they do it? Most likely. Everyone loves The Rock.[mashshare]
