It seems like every year there is small horror film that surprises everyone and becomes a huge hit. This year it was Don’t Breathe, which was released back in August. It was made for just under $10 million and it made over $150 million at the box office.
Obviously the positive reviews from critics helped the film, but even more than that, it was the trailer that convinced people. It was a trailer that just stuck with you. I remember seeing the trailer multiple times at the theater and every single time I was like, “Man, I gotta check that out.”
And it didn’t disappoint. It was suspenseful and genuinely scary. We won’t spoil anything for you, but we will say the ending left things open for a possible sequel.
A sequel that director Fede Alvarez and producer Sam Raimi didn’t want originally. While promoting the film’s digital release, Alvarez and Raimi talked to reporters about the sequel.
“Our first reaction when they told us, ‘Do you want to do it?’ was like, ‘No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. That’s Hollywood! That’s the devil! We don’t want to make a sequel just because we can.'”
But then they thought about it and discovered they had a wonderful idea for a sequel that actually got them excited.
“We got an idea that we’re really excited about, and I won’t tell you what it is because it will spoil the whole thing.”
And that’s when Raimi dropped this line, “It’s only the greatest idea for a sequel that I’ve ever heard! I’m not kidding!”
That should get you really excited because he’s responsible for Spider-Man 2 and Evil Dead II, so he has clearly figured out how to make a good sequel.
They plan to start writing the script soon. No release date has been announced, but we will keep you posted.
