The box office is down 5% compared to last year, even with the huge success of Joker. 2019 hasn’t been a great year for major studios in Hollywood, but that’s likely to change (at least for Disney) as they still have Frozen 2 and a new Star Wars flick.
But before we get to the big holiday releases, we have Warner Bros’. Doctor Sleep film. The sequel to Stanley Kubrick’s masterpiece The Shining, is hoping to get the box office back on track.
According to the early tracking reports, it should make around $30 million during its opening weekend, which will be more than enough to take the top spot at the box office.
Set decades after the events in ‘The Shining,’ the supernatural thriller sees Ewan McGregor take on the role of Danny Torrance, a man with psychic abilities who struggles with childhood trauma.
The response from critics has been mostly positive. It holds a 75% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. If the audience enjoys it, there’s a chance it could cross the $30 million mark.
Although, I wouldn’t say it’s likely considering how slow the box office has been lately.
‘Last Christmas‘ will also hit theaters this weekend. Unfortunately, it’s not off to a great start with a mostly negative response from critics.
