It’s a super-cali…ah you get the joke. It’s a good day for fans of Mary Poppins. On Tuesday, Disney announced that the Mary Poppins sequel will be released in a theater near you on December 25, 2018.
In addition to the release date, Disney also revealed the title of the sequel: Mary Poppins Returns. Emily Blunt and Hamilton creator/genius Lin-Manuel Miranda will star in the film. It will be directed by Rob Marshall, and he’ll be working with a screenplay written by David Magee.
So, yeah…the studio has some impressive names working on this film. It will be difficult for them to screw this up. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the story will be set in Depression-era London, “where a now grown-up Jane and Michael Banks, along with Michael’s three children, are visited by their former nanny following a tragedy in the family that leaves them numb and joyless.”
In a statement released after securing the directing job, Marshall had this to say about the original story/film…
“I am truly humbled and honored to be asked by Disney to bring P.L. Travers’ further adventures to the screen. The iconic original film means so much to me personally, and I look forward to creating an original movie musical that can bring Mary Poppins, and her message that childlike wonder can be found in even the most challenging of times, to a whole new generation.”
We look forward to it as well. Waiting is the hardest part! Two more years…
