Disney’s Live-Action ‘Dumbo’ Flick Disappoints With $45 Million Opening

Remember last weekend when we were celebrating the great success of Jordan Peele’s horror film, ‘Us’? The film grabbed the number one spot at the box office and made a record-breaking $70 million.

Well, it dropped to the number two spot this weekend with a $33 million total, which is still pretty impressive. It was only $12 million behind Disney’s live-action ‘Dumbo‘ film. The remake brought in $45 million during its opening weekend.

That number is pretty disappointing, considering most experts believed it would make over $50 million. The crazy part about this is that the remake was made on a reported $170 million budget.

Can you guess how much Peele needed for Us? $20 million. Pretty incredible, right? ‘Us’ made $25 million more than Dumbo in its opening weekend and was made for $150 million less!

For what it’s worth, Dumbo will probably have more global appeal. It has made over $71 million overseas, which brings its global total up to $116 million.

But still, it shows Hollywood that big budgets and outrageous remakes aren’t needed. You can still find success with original ideas and small budgets.
