Oliver Twist is one of Charles Dickens’ most famous works, and now Disney and Ice Cube are going to attempt to put a fresh spin on the story. The story about an orphan boy who goes from a life as a child laborer to being under the control of a gang leader in London.
As most of you know, Disney already adapted the story back in 1988 with the animated film Oliver and Company. But this new project with Ice Cube will be completely different.
Disney will team up with Cube and Thomas Kail, the director of Hamilton, to create a modern and musical take on the classic story. Cube is helping write the movie and he also plans to star as the gang leader Fagin in the film.
The ~modern musical~ will reportedly take on multiple musical genres. That’s pretty much all we know about the story right now, but it sounds like it has potential. I mean, it does show you how obsessed Hollywood is with remakes.
They had to go back almost 200 years to find this story. Pretty soon, they’re going to start remaking the remakes. Nothing will make sense and we’ll all be watching different versions of the same movie, drinking blended popcorn because we’re all too lazy to chew our food.
I can’t wait.
