Back in 2004, Disney released the sports docudrama ‘Miracle,’ which was about the United States men’s hockey team that won the gold medal in the 1980 Winter Olympics.
The film was a hit with the critics and the audience, thanks to fantastic performances from Kurt Russell and Michael Mantenuto.
Michael played a defenseman on the team who injured his knee in an exhibition game only to return against the Soviets to make a key play leading to their surprising win.
Following his starring role in the movie, Michael didn’t get much work in Hollywood. He did appear in two TV movies in 2006 and 2008, but that’s it.
He ended up joining the military, and seemed to be enjoying his life. Sadly, that was obviously not the case. The 35-year-old actor was found dead inside his car by police in Des Moines, Wash. According to a report from TMZ, Michael died from a self-inflicted gunshot.
In a news release announcing his death, Col. Guillaume Beaurpere wrote the following…
“Those of you that knew Mike will remember him for his passionate love for his family and his commitment to the health of the force.”
Our thoughts go out to his friends and family.
