It looks like the rumors were finally right! The Heat and Bridesmaids director Paul Feig confirmed that he is making a new Ghostbusters movie on his Twitter account. He also confirmed it will star “hilarious women” and he revealed The Heat screenwriter Katie Dippold will help him write the script.
It’s honestly still hard to believe this is actually happening. They have been trying to make a Ghostbusters 3 for years now. There were even several ideas in place for the third movie, including one with a younger cast taking over from the original, older cast. Thankfully, that idea never really went anywhere.
After announcing the news on Twitter, Feig talked with EW and provided some more details on his “scary” new project. He says he will be rebooting the franchise. It won’t be a ‘Ghostbusters 3‘ it will hopefully be the start of a new Ghostbusters.
“I had lunch with [Sony Pictures co-chairman] Amy Pascal when I got back to town. She was just saying, gosh, nobody wants to do [‘Ghostbusters 3’] I said, yeah, it’s really hard to take that on, especially since it’s 25 years later. How do you come back into a world that’s had these ghosts and all this? It just felt too difficult. How do you do it and not screw it up? But then it was bugging me for the next few days because ‘Ghostbusters‘ is such a great thing and everybody knows it, and it’s such a great world. It’s a shame to just let this thing sit there. I want to see another one. My favorite thing to do is work with funny women. I was like, what if it was an all-female cast? If they were all women?”
He then went deeper into this new world, offering more details on this exciting reboot.
“I love origin stories. That’s my favorite thing. I love the first one so much I don’t want to do anything to ruin the memory of that. So it just felt like, let’s just restart it because then we can have new dynamics. I want the technology to be even cooler. I want it to be really scary, and I want it to happen in our world today that hasn’t gone through it so it’s like, oh my God what’s going on?”
Well, it certainly sounds interesting. It sounds better than any Ghostbusters reboot before. Of course, we still don’t know who the female stars of the film will be, but there is a decent chance Melissa McCarthy will be one of them. She already has Bill Murray’s approval, and she has a long history with Feig.
Hopefully they give Amy Poehler a call. She is one of the best in the business. It would be a shame if they passed her up.
