No one works harder in Hollywood than Denzel Washington. I truly believe that. He cares about every project he touches, and he cared deeply about his latest film, ‘Roman J. Israel, Esq.‘
The movie was written and directed by Dan Gilroy (Nightcrawler) and in the film, Denzel plays a likely autistic legal savant who grew up as a political activist “and finds himself at a personal and professional crossroads following the death of his longtime partner.”
Gilroy gave Denzel the freedom to create the look of the character, and the 62-year-old actor did not disappoint. He came back with a few extra pounds on him, longer hair, and a gap between his teeth. The same gap he was born with but had filled in when he was in high school.
“He came in one day and smiled and said, ‘I went to the dentist.’ They drilled out the gap he was born with,” Gilroy explained. That’s how much Denzel cares.
The film received a standing ovation at its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival on September 10, 2017. Sadly, the movie has received mixed reviews (at best) from critics, so it probably won’t be taking home any Oscars.
But still, you gotta respect Denzel’s dedication. If you need a little motivation this Friday, watch the video below…
