David Cronenberg’s Sci-Fi Movie ‘Crimes of the Future’ Begins Filming In Greece

You can catch Kristen Stewart as Princess Diana in the upcoming film ‘Spencer‘ later this fall. Some say she could potentially be nominated for an Oscar for her performance.

But in the meantime, Stewart has started work on a new project, a sci-fi thriller titled Crimes of the Future.

The movie is being directed by David Cronenberg. It was also written by him. In addition to Stewart, this film stars Viggo Mortensen, Lea Seydoux and Tanaya Beatty.

Principial photography has begun in Athens, Greece. Shooting is expected to run until September, so we’re looking at around four weeks of filming.

According to promotional materials, the film takes a deep dive into the not-so-distant future where humankind is learning to adapt to its synthetic surroundings. This evolution moves humans beyond their natural state and into a metamorphosis known as ‘Accelerated Evolution Syndrome’ that alters their biological makeup. While some embrace the limitless potential of ‘transhumanism,’ others attempt to police it.

Mortensen released a statement already praising Cronenberg…

As we begin filming ‘Crimes of the Future,’ just two days into this new adventure with David Cronenberg, it feels like we’ve entered a story he collaborated on with Samuel Beckett and William Burroughs, if that were possible. We are being pulled into a world that is not quite like this or any other, and yet is one that feels strangely familiar, immediate and quite credible. I can’t wait to see where we end up.

Sounds exciting. No word on a potential release date, but we’re assuming sometime in 2022.
