This is either great news or terrible news, depending on how you feel about bringing dead things back to life. The Goonies is a classic film. It was released back in 1985, but it’s still just as entertaining in 2016. It was written by Chris Columbus and directed by Richard Donner. Those are two legends in Hollywood. To find a better team than that, you’d have to travel five hours north to Oakland.
No one wants to make a Goonies 2 without Donner, and as recently as two years ago, it looked like they wouldn’t have to. As some of you may remember, the director actually confirmed they were working on a sequel two years ago.
It got everyone excited, but now it’s 2016 and nothing has happened. This is bad news, according to Corey Feldman. He talked with MovieWeb recently, and he explained why he believes the sequel will never happen.
“Richard Donner is 87 years old. And it’s like, no one really wants to make it without him. He’s the driving force behind it. He says it’s still alive. But as we all know…When you get to that age, things slow down quite a bit. There is a big possibility that he might not want to keep driving it. So, I think without him, it doesn’t happen. And every day that passes, that he doesn’t do it, there is less and less chance that it is ever going to happen at all.”
It has to be a little disappointing for the fans and the cast, especially Feldman and Sean Astin. They have been fighting for a Goonies 2 for a long time now. At one point, they created a treatment for the film and showed it to Donner.
He liked the idea, but he felt like the project would be too expensive…
“He felt it was too expensive for what they have in mind. So, that said, I’m not a mind reader. I don’t know what that special magic recipe is that they are looking for. But I know that everyone’s fear is, ‘What are the odds of capturing magic in a bottle twice?’ And it’s a long shot.”
A long shot indeed. It might be best to leave this one in the ground.
