Disney just released a new trailer for ‘Artemis Fowl’ which is based on the popular fantasy novel series. Admittedly, I have not read the books, but according to reports, the novels portray the 12-year-old protagonist as a bit of a supervillain. A criminal mastermind.
But it looks like (at least from this trailer) that Disney is turning the main character into more of a hero.
Check out this one take from slashfilm…
Now Artemis Fowl, rather than being the antihero arc all us book readers know and love it to be, is…a lame superhero movie? His fairy foes (Holly and Mulch) are now his allies for some reason, and Butler is his mentor who trains him to be a defender of fairies? It looks cheesy and bad, and no, you can’t even win us over with a surprise Colin Farrell cameo as Artemis’ dad. I can’t begin to describe my disappointment with this trailer
Not a good look for Disney. It makes you wonder what exactly they’re thinking when it comes to adaptations like this. If you want to create some superhero fantasy film, simply create an original tale. You have the power.
Why take some preexisting property and completely change it? It’s just going to piss off the fanbase you’re trying to connect with.
Artemis Fowl will hit theaters May 29, 2020. Check out the trailer below…
