‘Captain Marvel’ Has Incredibly Strong $20.7 Million Thursday Night Opening

Even though the trolls are out there on Rotten Tomatoes giving ‘Captain Marvel’ a terrible audience score rating, they can’t stop its momentum.

The first Marvel flick with a female lead just scored one of the top preview grosses ever for a comic book adaptation. It made $20.7 million during its Thursday night debut, which is just $5 million behind Black Panther and Captain America: Civil War.

It’s looking like Captain Marvel will have no problem getting $120 million during its opening weekend. The number will likely be closer to $150 million, which is great news for Marvel/Disney.

The forecast is also promising overseas, where the tentpole is touching down in every major market this week and weekend— save for Japan — for a projected global bow well north of $300 million through Sunday. It has earned an impressive $44 million in its first two days. That doesn’t include an estimated opening day in China of $34 million, the second-highest start for any MCU title behind Infinity War.

It’s weird because this film has created a bit of rage in a special community online. That community, well, you can read more about it here. It’s a pretty interesting read.

In any event, Captain Marvel is set up to be a huge success.
