As we mentioned a few days ago, the 2019 box office is struggling. The domestic box office is down 14.5% behind last year’s numbers. It’s something Hollywood didn’t expect after the success of 2018.
But things might start turning around soon. ‘Captain Marvel‘ might save the day in March. Disney/Marvel’s first female-led superhero flick is currently tracking for a $100 million opening weekend.
It’s scheduled to be released March 8, which means it still has time to build more hype, which could make for an opening weekend closer to $120 million, according to the experts. If it brings home between $100 and $120 million, it will definitely put things back on the right track.
And if those numbers seem high to you, they shouldn’t. DC’s first female-led superhero blockbuster ‘Wonder Woman‘ premiered to a $103 million opening weekend.
Now if for some reason Captain Marvel doesn’t perform well during its opening weekend, it could be a sign of things to come for 2019.
