‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ Beats The Predictions, Makes $50 Million During Its Opening Weekend

The Queen biopic ‘Bohemian Rhapsody‘ has been getting mixed reviews (at best) from critics. When this movie was first announced, we were all thinking it’d generate some award buzz, but unfortunately that hasn’t been the case.

Still though, the audience at home seems to love it. The film made $50 million during its opening weekend in the states. That was more than enough to top the box office. It’s the second best opening for a music biopic, only behind 2015’s Straight Outta Compton, which made a little over $60 million.

Rami Malek stars as Freddie Mercury in this movie, and he’s the one thing both critics and the audience agree on. He did a masterful job portraying Freddie, and his efforts will likely earn him a best actor nomination.

By the way, the film made $72 million internationally, which means it’s already made a total of $122 million worldwide. That’s not a bad start at all.

Chris Aronson, Fox’s head of domestic distribution, told Variety he’s not surprised the audience enjoyed it more than the critics…

“I’m not surprised there’s a disconnect, but audiences didn’t miss it. That’s the power of word of mouth — and Queen and their music.”
