Last year, we were blessed with the return of high quality studio comedies with the release of Game Night and Blockers.

Filmmaker Kay Cannon was the director behind Blockers, and now she’s returning to direct another comedy film.

She will work alongside Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg’s production company Point Grey to direct the treasure-hunting story, 79ers.

Dylan Meyer is writing the script, based on actor Ben Schwartz’s original screenplay about a group of estranged friends who are reunited after 20 years to complete an unfinished treasure hunt they began as teens.

Honestly, the fact that Ben Schwartz’s wrote the original script for this movie is the most exciting part. The dude is hilarious. It gives me hope that this won’t be a paint by the numbers production.

Meanwhile, Cannon is having herself a moment in Hollywood. Fresh off the success of Blockers, Cannon is accepting offers left and right. In addition to 79ers, she’s also the writer/director behind Sony’s upcoming musical comedy adaptation of Cinderella.
