You know how I always complain about Hollywood making so many sequels? Well, I’ll be the first one to admit I am a total hypocrite. What I really mean when I say those mean things is, “WHY U NO MAKE THE SEQUELS I WANT TO SEE?!”
Today, Hollywood has delivered in a big and naughty way. Miramax and Broad Green Pictures have announced that Bad Santa 2 will happen, and Billy Bob Thornton will return to his role as Willie the Great. And you won’t have to wait too long to watch this film, it’s expected to be released during the 2016 holiday season.
Zanne Devine of Miramax had this to say about the news…
“We’ve been waiting far too long to see Billy Bob’s Willie mess with the holiday season in his own unique way. We couldn’t be more excited to partner with Billy Bob, the entire creative and producing team, and Broad Green and Sierra/Affinity to bring back the outrageous humor and characters that made this movie brand iconic in the first place.”
Filming will begin in January in Montreal. No other details are known at this time, but hopefully they don’t turn this sequel into a “BIGGER, BADDER…YOU WON’T BELIEVE WHAT SANTA IS DOING NOW!” disaster. This doesn’t need to be outlandish to work. The dark, realistic comedy is what made people fall in love with the original movie.
We’ll see what happens. I’m excited and nervous. By the way, the original film was made on a $23 million budget. It took home more than $76 million at the box office worldwide.
