It will be October in less than one week now, which means awards season is just a few months away. In November/December several likely award-winning films will be released inside indie theaters near you.
And with most of the major film festivals already over, we are now getting a better look at the upcoming Oscar race. One of the best awards writers, Scott Feinberg, released his first 2018 Oscar prediction rankings today, and there are a few surprises on the list.
For Best Picture, his frontrunners look like this:
- Dunkirk
- The Shape of Water
- Darkest Hour
- The Florida Project
- Lady Bird
- Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
- Get Out
- Battle of the Sexes
- Call Me By Your Name
- The Big Sick
The two surprises on the list (for me, at least) are Get Out and Battle of the Sexes. We all know Get Out was one of the best reviewed films of the year, but it doesn’t really seem like the type of film that gets a lot of love during awards season. And while I’m not surprised that Dunkirk is a frontrunner, I don’t agree with it. It will probably win a lot of awards, but I think it’s the La La Land of this year.
Best Director rankings look like this:
Guillermo del Toro (The Shape of Water)
Christopher Nolan (Dunkirk)
Jordan Peele (Get Out)
Greta Gerwig (Lady Bird)
