We were all so excited when we learned Ben Affleck would be joining the Batman franchise. Everyone thought he’d make a wonderful Bruce Wayne, but when Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice came out, critics slammed the movie. It got a super low 27% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
It was a huge kick to the gut for Affleck. He put everything he had into the role, and while most people agreed he was one of the better parts of the movie, he took the poor reviews to heart.
He tried to bounce back from it. It was announced a few months later that he was going to star in and direct the next Batman movie, but that quickly fell apart. It was revealed he would be stepping down as the director, but would remain as Batman.
But now, even that won’t happen. Ben Affleck is done with the character. He confirmed all the rumors during his appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!
“I tried to direct a version of [Batman], [I] worked with a really good screenwriter, but kinda just couldn’t come up with a version. Couldn’t crack it. I thought it was time for someone else to take a shot at it. And they’ve got some really good people.”
It was announced a week or two ago that filmmaker Matt Reeves will be taking the lead on ‘The Batman,’ which is set to be released in 2021.
Reeves told The Hollywood Reporter the following…
“It’s very much a point of view-driven, noir Batman tale. It’s told very squarely on his shoulders, and I hope it’s going to be a story that will be thrilling but also emotional.”
