Most Christmas movies focus on family. If you make a film about the holidays, the whole family should be able to enjoy it together. But Bad Santa doesn’t play by the rules. The 2003 cult comedy was definitely not a movie for the whole family; however, it was hilarious and it’s one of my favorite Christmas movies.
Earlier this year it was revealed the film would finally be getting a sequel. More than 10 years after the original, Billy Bob Thornton returns as the washed-up department store Santa. And it’s not just Thornton returning, his partner in crime Marcus (Tony Cox) will also return, along with the hilarious kid played by Brett Kelly. Of course, he’s no longer a kid now, so it’ll be interesting to see how he turned out.
Variety is reporting Bad Santa 2 will arrive in theaters November 23, 2016. That’s right, folks. You have just one more year to wait. Sadly, the sequel might have some trouble putting out quality numbers at the box office. It will be going up against the Harry Potter spin-off Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Matt Damon’s action adventure The Great Wall, and Disney’s animated film Moana.
Of course, the only direct competition would probably be coming from The Great Wall. I can’t imagine there will be too many families trying to decide between Moana and Bad Santa 2.
