Well, damn. When it was announced last week that the release date for Pitch Perfect 3 was being pushed back to December 22, 2017, the marketing team was able to twist the news and make it seem like a positive thing.

The official Twitter page sent out the tweet you see below…

WOO! PITCHMAS, RIGHT? WE’RE GETTING MORE PITCH PERFECT FOR CHRISTMAS! IT’S GOING TO BE THE BEST CHRISTMAS EVER! THANKS, JESUS!

It was a smart move, and it was starting to get fans pumped about the date change. But the latest news coming from Pitch Perfect land might be harder to spin. It was announced a few days ago that Elizabeth Banks would not be returning as the director of the third film.

She will stay on as a producer and will make an appearance in the sequel, but she will not be directing it. She talked about the difficult decision at the annual PGA Produced By Conference in Culver City.

“It was all timing. We feel obligated to put out the best movie and anyone who has done sequels, this third one is hard to figure out what the story is. We want to give the audience what it wants but not making it repetitive. We have been in development and it took longer than we thought, and I needed to shoot another movie in the summer. If we pushed into fall it bumped up against my parental responsibilities, which made me feel uncomfortable.”

So not only are they struggling with the plot of the third film, they also need to find a new director. It’s not looking good right now, but pushing the date back five months will give them a little more time to figure things out.

Don’t give up yet!
