Did you watch ‘Hereditary‘ this past weekend? If you answered no, please correct that this week. It’s one of the best films I have seen this year. It legit made me feel uncomfortable, which is not an easy thing to do. It had me on the edge of my seat the entire time and every actor gave a brilliant performance.
And that’s why I’m happy to see it made $13 million during its opening weekend. That number might seem low to you, but for a low-budget A24 film, it’s actually record-breaking.
It’s A24’s largest opening ever inside theaters. The movie was made on a $10 million budget, so they’ve already made that back.
Unfortunately, this is where the good news ends for the movie. Even though critics praised the movie (some, like me, even calling it the best horror film of the year) the general audience hated it. It scored a terrible D+ on CinemaScore, which means the majority of people who saw it this past weekend did not like it.
And let’s be honest here, they probably didn’t like it because it wasn’t your typical horror movie. There are no clowns or chainsaws. This movie doesn’t go for one jump scare after the other. Instead, it makes you feel so incredibly uncomfortable that you almost want to walk out of the theater, which I think is f**king brilliant.
But apparently, many people disagree. It’ll be interesting/depressing to see how far the numbers drop next weekend.
For now though, let’s celebrate the $13 million opening.
