Whaaat? We are already talking about an award show that won’t air for another 4-5 months? Yes. It might be a little early to start making official predictions for the 88th Academy Awards, but we feel confident saying the five stars you below might have a special night this coming February.
It will be interesting to look back at this post in a few months to see how right/wrong we were.
No. 5 – Michael Fassbender
Michael Fassbender has two huge movies coming out this award season. You have Macbeth coming out in December (in the States) along with Steve Jobs coming up in October. So far, the response to both films has been overwhelmingly positive. It looks like Fassbender will clearly win the match against Ashton Kutcher for the best Jobs portrayal.
And it looks like the Danny Boyle-directed film will give Fassbender the best shot at a Best Actor nomination. You can click here to check out a trailer for the movie.
No. 4 – Jennifer Lawrence
This is honestly just a safe bet. We don’t know how critics will react to her film Joy, but considering Lawrence has been nominated for every David O. Russell film she’s starred in, we feel confident putting her name on this list. I mean, the movie has Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper and Robert De Niro, and it’s centered around an actual person. Someone is going to be taking home an award.
No. 3 – Eddie Redmayne
Eddie Redmayne’s The Danish Girl was well received at the Toronto International Film Festival. The reviews have been extremely positive, and most people claim Redmayne’s magnificent performance could land him another Best Actor win.
As most of you know, the 33-year-old actor took home the award earlier this year for his impressive work in the biographical drama The Theory of Everything. It’s difficult for any actor to win back-to-back years, but it’s especially difficult for someone so young. However, he definitely has a fighting chance with his most recent performance as the first person to undergo gender-confirmation surgery.
Check out the trailer here. Scheduled to be released November 27, 2015.
No. 2 – Leonardo DiCaprio
No, this isn’t some sick joke. We truly believe Leonardo DiCaprio has a chance at getting his first Oscar. We were able to cross Julianne Moore off our “10 Incredible Actors Who Have Never Won An Oscar” list from last year after her Best Actress win for Still Alice.
And hopefully, we’ll be able to do the same with Leo in just a few months. His performance in the upcoming film The Revenant could be his ticket to Oscar Land. He’s currently one of the favorites for Best Actor, and it’s easy to see why. The trailer for this movie is stunning, which isn’t surprising when you see that Alejandro G. Iñárritu directed it.
He took home several awards earlier this year for Birdman.
Come March 1, we might be able to retire this GIF…
No. 1 – Brie Larson
And last (or first?) is the incredibly talented Brie Larson. Her name might not be as familiar as the stars above her, but that’s going to change soon. You better purchase your ticket for the Brie-Brie Hype Train because seats are limited, folks. As of right now, Brie is probably best known for her work in Short Term 12. The film has a 99% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and it should be 100% because it’s just that good. You should definitely check it out if you haven’t seen it yet.
The award shows obviously weren’t ready to accept her talent then; however, that’s already starting to change with her latest performance in Room. The film just took home the People’s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival, and that is HUGE news. Since 2008, every People’s Choice Award winner (minus one in 2011) has been nominated for Best Picture.
