The Academy Awards have played it safe for a few years now. Ellen DeGeneres was the host in 2014, and Neil Patrick Harris hosted the huge award show back in February of this year. Sadly, his hosting style just didn’t work for the Oscars, resulting in a significant drop in total viewership.
Hollywood’s biggest night of the year needs to get back on track in 2016, and it looks like Chris Rock might be up for the challenge. Variety is reporting that the comedian is currently in talks to host. They also said we should expect to hear an announcement soon.
In addition to that report, The Hollywood Reporter also claims Rock is the most likely choice for the difficult job. Of course, the comedian’s rep refuses to comment on the rumors, and the spokesperson for the Academy also declined to comment.
But me? Well, I’ll definitely comment on the rumors. I think Chris Rock would kill it. Hopefully he would make things a little uncomfortable. That’s what you need in a host. Someone who is not afraid to tell a joke that makes people turn to the person sitting next to them and whisper, “Did he really just say that?”
And that’s obviously what the Academy is hoping for. Those moments bring in huge ratings. After a disappointing 2015, they’re hoping for a successful 2016.
We’ll keep you posted. The 88th annual Academy Awards is scheduled to air February 28, 2016.
